Slip Techniques

Slip is an essential tool and technique for any pottery studio. Potters and ceramic artists tend to think of slip as the “glue” used to attach one piece of clay to another. However, slip is much more versatile and functions as decoration as well as a casting form. Students learn the basic preparation and applications of slip trailing in this six-session clay taught by Resident Teaching Artist Yusuf Etudaiye as they prepare slips and add colorants, test slip with glazes, and apply the glaze to pottery pieces and/or testing strips. Suitable clay (brown for $25 and white for $30) is available for purchase at WaterWorks; clay tools (optional) are also available for purchase for $15.
